Caraway Bread Sticks
Introduction: This is a very popular appetizer in Romania, simple and easy to make. It goes very well with a cold beer or packed for a snack at work.

Ingredients
  • ◾3 cups of flour
  • ◾1 cup of butter (2 sticks) or ¾ cup of laird or ½ of butter and ½ cup of laird
  • ◾1 cup of yogurt (depending on the yogurt water content, you may need a little more or less)
  • ◾2½ tbsp of dry yeast
  • ◾1 tsp of sugar
  • ◾1 tsp of salt
  • ◾1 tsp of ground caraway
  • ◾1 egg for brushing
  • ◾2 tbsp of caraway seeds
Instructions
  1. Put the yeast and the sugar in a small bowl, 4 table spoons of water, mix well until the yeast is completely dissolved, set aside.
  2. Put the flour in a large bowl, add the butter (or the selected combination of fats),
  3. Incorporate the butter into flour using your fingers, mix until getting a sandy consistency
  4. Add yogurt, salt, caraway and dissolved yeast
  5. Mix well with your hand for 3 -4 minutes until the dough is homogenous
  6. Form the dough in a shape of a ball, cover it with a clean towel and let it rest for 30 minutes at room temperature
  7. Add some flour on a flat surface, pat the dough down with your hands, using a rolling pin roll out the dough into a flat sheet of 3 mm thickness
  8. Using a pastry cutter, cut stripes of ⅔ inch wide; perpendicular to the first cuts, apply cuts of 2-3 long.
  9. Mix the egg in a shallow bowl and brush the sticks with the egg mixture
  10. Sprinkle with the caraway seeds
  11. Bake in preheated oven for 25 minutes at 375 F, until golden brown.
